When you’re ready to submit a piece for review, please follow this process to ensure that we receive it and can consider it in a timely manner:

1) If you don’t already have a Medium account, you’ll need to create one. You DO NOT need to pay for the account — a free account is fine. Once you have your handle, email it to writetovoteproject@gmail.com so we can add you as a writer. This can take 24–48 hours, and we will confirm that we have added you. If you don’t hear back from us within that time frame, please follow up.

2) Once you have been added as a writer, you need to write your post in Medium. Click “Write” in the top right corner and either write your piece directly into the Medium page or cut and paste your essay from another program. DO NOT publish it.

3) We encourage you to add at least one public domain image (you can find many public domain images at Wikimedia Commons, Pixabay, Unsplash, and other cites). DO NOT use images unless they are in the public domain or you own the rights to publish them. Please be sure to credit images (here is a good guide for how to do so).

4) When you’re finished writing or copy/pasting, you can access Medium’s publishing tools, including subtitle, story description, and topics. In the top right corner, next to the publish button, click on the three dots. There you can navigate to add topics, etc. If we choose to publish your piece, we reserve the right to edit these settings, but you are strongly encouraged to make use of them in line with your vision for your piece.

5) Once your post is polished, you need to add it to Write to Vote Project for review. Click on the three dots again, then click “Add to publication.” Select Write to Vote Project, and submit.

6) We try to respond to every post within 48 hours with one of three responses: (1) accept, (2) revise and resubmit, (3) pass. Often we will respond with suggestions for revision, and we are very happy to engage with writers in the process of revision. Once the piece meets our standards for publication, we reserve the right to make additional copy edits, but we will not edit in a way that will change the meaning of your piece.

7) We will publish it as soon as possible given our publication schedule and queue, and we’ll send you a confirmation of its publication and a link to share. If you share on social media, please tag us (@WriteToVoteProj on Twitter, @Write2Vote on Instagram) and use hashtag #Write2Vote.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email us as writetovoteproject@gmail.com, and we’ll do our best to respond as promptly as possible!
