The Write to Vote Project is an initiative that brings together people interested in the history and importance of voting rights — and in particular, in defending and advancing them. The Write to Vote Project began as a group of college faculty and students who were concerned about the status of voting rights in the United States, but it has grown beyond college campuses and even beyond the U.S. We gladly welcome anyone interested in participating.

The Write to Vote Project is non-partisan (for what we mean by that, see this essay by Write to Vote’s Founding Director, John Duffy). Our goal is to support democracy, encourage civic engagement, and advance voting rights in the US and around the world.

The Educational Mission

At heart, the Write to Vote Project is an educational project. The Write to Vote Project on Medium is devoted to publishing work that explains, defends, and advances voting rights in the United States and around the world. We believe that there is much we can teach and learn from each other, even for those of us who are no longer in classrooms on a regular basis.

At the same time, given how we started, teachers and students — at all levels —remain at the center of our mission. In Write to Vote classrooms, students write essays, op-eds, letters to editors, personal narratives, poetry, and other texts on topics related to voting and voting rights. Topics might include the women’s suffrage movement, voter suppression during Reconstruction, the effects of gerrymandering, and more. We happily encourage students and teachers to contribute to the publishing endeavor, and we also host a website that collects teaching and research materials dedicated to voting rights. Anyone interested in contributing to the website should send an email to WritetoVoteProject@gmail.com.

Who We Are

We are teachers, students, writers, and advocates of democracy. We come from all over the United States, and to an increasing degree, from countries around the world. And we believe we can play some small part in advancing democracy, equality, freedom, and justice by advocating for people’s right to vote and by inviting others to join us in the effort.
